Red Sea / Sharm el Sheikh / Ras Ghamila

  Description

With the name, Ras Ghamila, the divers call this the tongue of the reef, which extends along the east, and on which a green lighthouse can be found. It marks the western boundary of the street of Tiran.

The madrepore reef is divided from the sea by a vast and rather shallow sand lagoon and is crossed over by a small natural canal that is sometimes used by local fishermen. Ras Ghamila is an interesting place for a fine drift dive that is not too difficult. The classic dive begins on a slightly inclined sand plateau, staying at a depth of approximately 15 meters, and then continues in a sort of gliding motion northwards, parallel to the edge of the reef at a level of the lighthouse.

On the gentle slope of the reef, which descends to an average depth of about 8 meters, large colonies of Porites coral and some Giant triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) can be seen. On the plateu beautiful table corals thrive, around which, swarms of predator fish swim.

  Highlights

Normally the dive at Ras Ghamila belongs to one of the easier dives where a mixture of flora and fauna can be observed. Do not move too far away from the slope of the reef, otherwise you will not be able to observe the reef fish and pelagic species. It is advisable to swim parallel to the height of the lighthouse in the direction of the open sea, in order to be able to reach the boat, as the current can sometimes be very strong.
